Beaver Tailwater - Canebreak Hole
(Campground "D" Access)
UTM 15 425181E 4031915N (NAD27)
Campground "D" is the second Corps of Engineers campground downstream of the dam. The road to Campground "C" continues on down to Campground "D" and beyond. There is a walk-in access at campground location 21, but no parking. Park at the bath house and walk down. The access road goes on past the campground and deadends at a turn around where there is another walk down access at an area locals call "Canebrake Hole." Anglers often wade across the river at low water here to gain access to Crane Roost Bluff further downstream, but caution is strongly advised since any rising water will prevent anglers from making it back across and may put them at serious risk. The area is more safely accessed at low water by boat or canoe launched at the dam.
The access is in the middle of the "Artificials Only" area. In the shallows, trout often sip in midges and dry fly action can be good. In the deeper holes, there are often larger trout waiting to hit a nymph or woolly bugger. Paddlefish, walleye and schools of striper are often seen in this area in the late spring.
