Photo: "Trout Lilies Announce Spring" - "Trout Lily" (Dogtooth Violet, Erythronium) is in bloom along the White River and tributaries. This one I saw along Richland Creek on St. Patrick's Day while backpacking on the Ozark Highlands Trail. A member of the lily family, the name "trout lily" comes from the shape and color of the two leaves, which suggests the form of a brook or brown trout. All rights reserved, Scott Branyan.
